Kustom Restoration: Dairy Delivery

restore dd

This Dairy Delivery casting belongs to Mutt, and he has requested for me to restore it. Looks like there is no problems with it, right? Well on the surface the body is still in quite good condition. Only when you look under the body you can see what needs restoration.

Eww. What happened here? Looks like the DD has been rescued from a BBQ session, or picked up from a pot of hot water.

Damage assessment: The chassis looks twisted and distorted by the heat, and the tyres are also out of shape. The windows too, looks like it has been exposed to too much heat and have been distorted into a shape beyond use.

What can be used: Chassis (barely).
What goes to the trash: Wheels, Plastic Windows.

The interior looks alright, thankfully there was not much damage or deformation. Its just dirty, so that can be cleaned up. If it was deformed then the work for it would be a lot more complicated.

So to work then! First of all lets take care of the exterior, I wiped the exterior clean of any dirt and grime with water. Then I waxed the body to bring out the shine. Can you see how shiny it is now? I think I can see myself in there! :-)

The chassis work involves some bending with brute force and some putty work to patch up and smoothen out the edges and bumps.

Next was looking for suitable wheels. I got these wheels off a Jada die cast. Since the axles were too thick and long, so I used another Hot Wheels axle and cut it to an appropriate length. Then the rims were glued onto the axle.

After the putty dried, I sanded out the excess areas, and at the same time smoothen the surface. Then I sprayed flat black onto the chassis and detailed it with chrome silver paint.

As for the interior, after some cleaning I detailed it with shades of red, black and chrome silver. And then I fitted a new steering wheel, which is also sourced from a Jada. For a finishing touch, I used clear plastics to fit as new window panels for the front windscreen and rear door windows.

Put the DD back together and then its done! All the completed pictures are below. :-)
